JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Chair of the Department of Medical Sciences, adjunct faculty receive a contract or letter stating adjunct employment with a primary responsibility in teaching. Faculty members assess, plan, implement and evaluate instruction for students in classroom settings or laboratories in coordination with established course and program objectives. Serving University of Saint Francis (USF) students and the USF community is paramount. To provide a consistent quality experience across the university, the USF Way, outlined in the Employee Handbook, is used to describe service expectations for all employees.

Major Responsibilities/Activities  

  • Teaching on-ground (in Crown Point, IN) and/or online sections for undergraduate Anatomy and Physiology lectures/labs, Microbiology lecture/labs, and Pathophysiology lectures.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a faculty member is effective teaching. For details on classroom and clinical responsibilities – See USF Faculty Handbook. Faculty are expected to:

  • Teach courses consistent with the catalog description and content map.
  • Teach assigned classes at the scheduled time and place and meets required contact hours.
  • Integrate evidence-based practice in fulfilling all roles of faculty practice.
  • Collaborate with colleagues for instructional improvement via professional peer review.
  • Submit reports and requests for information promptly.
  • Fulfill the Code of Ethics of the university and for the profession.
  • Teach students using appropriate methodologies to facilitate student classroom and/or clinical learning experiences.
  • Create an effective learning environment for students.
  • Effectively communicate with students.
  • Facilitate critical reflection and support innovation in students.
  • Provide timely feedback and fairly evaluate students’ progress.
  • Evaluate student laboratory and classroom performance and provide individual counsel and guidance as necessary to promote student success.
  • Propose plans to improve students’ performance.
  • Maintain appropriate records such as test scores, anecdotal notes and attendance on an ongoing basis to document evidence of student progress.
  • Assignments may be adjusted for special assignments at the discretion of the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • An earned master’s degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in biology, biomedical sciences, or another closely related discipline; OR
  • Have sufficient knowledge, with a minimum five years’ experience, in a relevant field to teach the courses assigned and possess teaching and/or instructional experience relevant to the courses assigned.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Demonstrates an understanding of educational theory, instructional methods and evaluation technique and use of technology utilized in higher education in a classroom setting.
  • Demonstrates analytical and organizational skills necessary to plan, implement and evaluate educational activities to assure compliance with established goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written, necessary to interact effectively with all university constituents.
  • Able to work well with faculty, students, staff, administrators and external stake holders.
  • Able to coordinate services to the needs of diverse populations within the time and financial limits of the institution.
  • Must be willing to work irregular, and sometimes long hours, including weekends, university breaks, and times when not under contract.
