Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The School of Humanities and Social Science is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Lecturer to the Sociology subject area to cover for staff sabbaticals in both the first and second semesters of 2024-2025 academic year. We are a vibrant school with a record of outstanding outcomes in student satisfaction surveys and research exercises. We seek an outstanding candidate with a proven ability to deliver excellent student experience in covering for staff absence due to sabbatical leave. The successful candidate will be required to deliver the module 6108SOC Body Politics: Gender, Sexuality and Society along with other core and optional teaching including a level 5 module which covers quantitative research methods using SPSS and will possess specialist knowledge and experience relevant to the requirements of this specialist teaching.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Sociology or be close to completion and possess the research and teaching attributes to fulfil the role to the highest standard. You will be expected to embrace our civic agenda in active partnership with our neighbours in the city region, but also to reach out to partners nationally and globally.

The School of Humanities and Social Science has an excellent track record in producing high quality research and a supportive and innovative teaching and learning experience for our students. Our Sociology programme area offers vibrant undergraduate degrees in Sociology and in Criminology and Sociology, with an optional foundation year, and Masters provision under development alongside a growing portfolio of international HE franchise partners. We have healthy student recruitment and a commitment to actively pursuing teaching and research innovations and opportunities.

This is an exciting time for a high-quality individual with a strong teaching background, commitment to the student experience and an impactful research track record and agenda to join us to help shape the future of Sociology in the School and in the wider PPC subject grouping. We have recently undergone a successful Periodic Programme Review and are now seeking to refresh and renew the subject by offering our students an increased emphasis on state power, migration, protest and cultural and criminological perspectives, areas of student interest in terms of both employability and critical study.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Programme Leaders Dr Cassie Ogden and Dr David Tyrer, email: [email protected]

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

LJMU values diversity and provides a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can fulfil their potential.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
