Life Support Systems Operator (Aquaculture/Fish Farms)

We are seeking a subject matter expert in aquatic animal life support operators (AALSO) to care for our aquaculture systems and animals. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens’ announced “REZOOVENATION: The Campaign to Inspire will expand wellness-inspired habitats for animal care, grow conservation initiatives, offer improved educational spaces and guest services, and introduce new species.” This is a Manatee Critical Care Center expansion, that includes a new 330,000-gallon Manatee River aquarium.

We are seeking someone who has been in a similar role for the past couple of years and is mechanically inclined to operate life support systems and equipment that impact water quality for aquatic and non-aquatic species. Daily tasks will involve troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining sophisticated recirculating aquaculture systems, aquatic tank washers, and integrated electronic water quality monitoring systems. You will be responsible for troubleshooting complex water treatment and filtration systems in both freshwater and saltwater environments, including pumps, filtration systems, valves, ozone-generating systems, ultra-violet light systems, heating and cooling systems, and water testing. Familiarity with regulatory agencies and regulations (USDA, USFWS, AZA, AALSO) is essential. We are looking for an accountable team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is willing to be the subject matter expert while following all safety procedures.

Do you have...

  • Experience in general water chemistry?
  • Proven two (2) years’ experience in a similar role?
  • Mechanically inclined with expertise in life support systems and equipment?
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies and regulations (USDA, USFWS, AZA, AALSO).
  • Knowledgeable of water quality parameters?
  • An accountable, team-oriented individual thriving in a fast-paced environment.


A Plus…

  • Certification in life support and/or water quality through AALSO.
  • Knowledge of AZA and USDA standards of aquatic and non-aquatic species.
  • Knowledge of water quality systems, water chemistry analysis techniques, pool equipment.
  • Experience working with Life Support Systems (Ozone Generators), large scale aquariums, HVAC, and general maintenance.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to consistently remain on your feet for prolonged periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity for standing, reaching, flexibility, and body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, stoop, bend, lift, kneel, crawl, climb, jump, dig and prolonged standing.
  • Grasp, turn, and manipulate objects of varying size and weight, requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to operate motorized cart, trucks, hand and/or power tools.
  • Auditory ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, two-way radio, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to transport and move items up to 50 pounds for short distances without difficulty.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium while performing various jobs.
  • Ability to access and navigate each department at the organization on foot, including any construction sites.
  • Visual and auditory acuity appropriate for safety and discern differences in documents.
  • Exceptional visual acuity is required, along with the ability to communicate, comprehend and decipher/hear information accurately, using a two-way radio.
