Chief Insurance Officer

Job Description

A safety technology and insurance company is seeking a Chief Insurance Officer (CIO). The CIO will assume the highest-level position within the insurance business, directly collaborating with the chief executive officer (CEO), board of directors and capacity partners. This role entails leadership across various domains, from shaping distribution strategy to refining underwriting practices. Collaborating closely with the chief strategy officer and their team of data experts, the CIO will spearhead initiatives to enhance policy pricing methods and contribute to innovative business expansion endeavors. Working in tandem with the CEO, the CIO will drive the organization’s growth trajectory, aiming to scale the business from $50 million to more than $300 million in gross written premiums. This will involve crafting growth strategies in new territories and cultivating relationships with brokerages nationwide to promote the organization’s unique offerings. This is a retained search.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct all aspects of underwriting and distribution operations.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives for pricing policies and the integration of data-driven underwriting models.
  • Conduct comprehensive analysis to identify class codes where technology-driven approaches can significantly reduce losses.
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with brokers to expand submission volumes and secure new business opportunities.
  • Drive recruitment, hiring and management of underwriting and distribution teams to ensure alignment with company objectives.
  • Champion the adoption of technology solutions to enhance operational efficiency and streamline administrative processes.

Requirements

  • 12 years of experience with increasing authority in workers’ compensation, focused on the mid-market segment
  • 7 years of management experience
  • Demonstrated success directly managing underwriting
  • Experience leading distribution teams (preferred)
  • Experience deploying new data-driven pricing models into underwriting production and driving continuous improvement in collaboration with an innovation team
  • Ability to use sophisticated underwriting tools to price policies for accounts with both debit and credit modifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced degree in business or related field, or CPCU certification (preferred)
