Senior R&D Scientist – Polyurethane Foam Insulation

The Insulation Research and Development team consists of engineers and scientists that are responsible for developing breakthrough technologies in support of CCM’s current and future needs in the roofing and wall insulation businesses. The associate scientist will work closely with value chain partners, commercial leadership, and technical leadership to support the current business and influence technology development to enable the next generation of sustainable polyisocyanurate insulation technologies.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for an individual to contribute innovative technology and product solutions to deliver growth for the insulation product line and market. The successful candidate in this position will become an expert in our insulation products and will lead major innovation and new product development projects within the Research and Innovation group. This position operates under the general guidance of the R&D Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Leading multiple Innovation and New Product Development projects critical to grow the insulation business.
• Leading research activities on new and existing products as well as identifying and implementing new technologies within the insulation group.
• Utilizing advanced material characterization techniques to establish structure property relationships of polymer materials.
• Managing the technical projects from ideation through scale up to commercialization.
• Supporting the insulation business through new product development, processing and performance improvement, raw material qualification and cost reduction projects.
• Collaborating with sales, marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, warranty departments and CCM staff on defining project priorities, project scope and future development directions.
• Publish technical reports, conduct technical presentations, and champion safety.

Requirements

• MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Material Science & Engineering, or Chemistry
• 5 years of experience in the development of polyurethane/polyisocyanurate products and their associated processing technologies is a plus
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of the physical, chemical, and mechanical behavior of thermoset polymers. Knowledge specific to polyurethane/polyisocyanurate chemistries is a plus.
• Basis statistical and data analysis skills, understanding of structure property relationships of polymers
• Experience with FTIR and rheological analysis of polymers
• Experience in formulating for polyurethane/polyisocyanurate systems
• Strong project management and leadership skills in a cross functional environment
• Experience conducting trials in a manufacturing environment as well as executing experiments on lab and pilot-scale equipment
• Experience working in a phase-gate process for new product development
• Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization
