Forestry Supervisor

Responsibilities

Trains and supervises crews in the performance of forestry operations, municipal nursery operation, and street maintenance functions. Directs and coordinates the activities of a municipal arboricultural program involving shade and street trees on the public rights-of-way and the operation of the City greenhouse and nursery. Responsible for organizing and directing the planting, care, maintenance and removal of trees, flower beds, and shrub beds, and the management of the municipal tree nursery to ensure an adequate inventory for future City plantings. Plans, directs and coordinates the work of tree crews involved in pruning, removing, spraying, planting, caring for, bracing and maintaining City-owned trees; oversees work site safety in areas of traffic control using lane closures and delineation according to ODOT specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Forestry, Horticulture, or other related field AND 4 years of experience in arboriculture work. Must have 2 years of supervisory experience in forestry.

OR

High School Diploma (or G.E.D.) AND 8 years of forestry experience. Must have 2 years of supervisory experience in forestry.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

Certifications

Within 120 days of appointment must obtain and maintain a Public Operator's License for the application of pesticides, from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, as a term and condition of continued employment.

Must be certified by the International Society of Arboriculture as a Certified Arborist or be able to obtain the certification within 365 days of appointment. Must maintain certification as a condition of employment.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Within 120 days of appointment, incumbent must have an Ohio Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a Tanker Endorsement, including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes, and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio. Out of state residents must have the equivalent commercial driver’s license from their state of residency at time of appointment/promotion and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

General Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; works in wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; works with moving mechanical parts and is exposed to extreme heat or cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Background Check

A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
