Senior Accountant, Finance

The mission of the Allen Institute Administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, administration helps facilitate team learning and the institute’s overall mission.

The Senior Accountant is a key member of the Finance team. Reporting to the Senior Accounting Manager, this position will primarily be responsible for the month-end close activities, preparation of financial statements, external audits, tax filings, and day-to-day operational activity. The position requires a highly motivated and analytical thinker that can analyze and understand complex transactions and make accounting treatment recommendations.

Essential Functions

  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and control the month-end close process by preparing monthly journal entries and ensuring proper, accurate, and timely recording of transactions in accordance with GAAP and company accounting policies
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements and variance analysis to senior finance leaders
  • Provide timely reconciliations of balance sheet accounts. Must be able to track down and resolve any discrepancies
  • Prepare weekly cash flow forecast report
  • Prepare and file monthly Sales and Use tax to the Dept. of Revenue, and other governmental regulatory filings as required
  • Support the external tax and financial audits, including preparation of audit schedules and responding to auditor questions and requests
  • Oversee the maintenance, tracking and reconciliation of Fixed Assets
  • Continuously maintain and update the documentation and monitoring of internal controls as needed
  • Proactively identify, recommend, and implement processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Conduct technical accounting research and prepare accounting memos
  • Serve as an accounting subject matter expert. Be a technical mentor to others in the accounting department and advisor to internal business partners
  • Other ad hoc projects as needed

Required Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business or equivalent combination of degree and experience
  • 3 years of relevant accounting and/or auditing experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting required

Preferred Education And Experience

  • 5-10 years equivalent experience preferred
  • CPA preferred
  • Experience performing reconciliations, month-end close, and variance analysis
  • Audit experience preferred
  • Experience with Oracle Cloud Fusion or other large complex ERP system
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to balance various projects simultaneously
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills. Must have the ability and willingness to research and tie out account reconciliations
  • Intermediate Excel skills (VLOOKUP’s and Pivot Tables, for example) as well as the ability to work with large amounts of data
  • Hands on PowerBI and SharePoint experience
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a successful team
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and remain flexible in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to partner with IT team to implement solutions or enhancements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to extract data and define and solve problems
  • Not-for-Profit accounting experience, a plus
  • Grant experience or knowledge, a plus
  • High ethical standards in all aspects of work

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and any remote work must be performed in Washington State. Expectation is to be on site 2 to 3 days per week.

Annualized Salary Range

$82,650 - $121,200*

  • Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
