About Bank Street

A leader in progressive education for more than 100 years, the Bank Street School for Children provides students, from nursery through 8th grade, an education that engages their natural curiosity, nurtures critical thinking, and helps to develop a sense of community and social responsibility. Through a teaching approach that is fundamentally hands-on and child-centered, Bank Street students develop the courage and confidence to think independently, work collaboratively, understand themselves and others more deeply, and possess the compassion to make meaning of the world around them.

About The Position

The Math/Science teacher is responsible for teaching math and science and also serves as a homeroom teacher responsible for building community and attending to the social/emotional development of students. We seek an innovative educator with a Masters Degree and at least three or more years of experience teaching upper elementary and/or early middle school-aged students. Experience with implementing student-centered math and/or science curriculum and working in a collaborative environment is desired. School for Children staff are expected to work 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays, and until 5:00 PM on Wednesdays for a weekly afternoon faculty meeting.

Overview Of Curriculum

  • The math curriculum includes an arithmetic study, a rational number study, statistics, a variety of problem solving explorations, and a geometry study. We use Connected Math (6th grade) as our foundational curriculum and supplement that with teacher created materials.
  • The focus of the science course is a study of force, motion and simple machines, an exploration of variables as a function of experimental design, science Expo: where students work in groups to design an effective experiment and communicate their findings with the larger community, and a study of geology.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with math/science partner to plan and teach the math and science curriculum
  • Serve as co-advisor and homeroom teacher
  • Collaborate with the Math/Science Team and Math/Science Coordinator to develop curriculum
  • Attend regular division, department, and supervisory meetings
  • Communicate regularly with families and others who support learning and growth of students
  • Provide extra help to students as necessary during activities periods and morning math
  • Attend to other duties as specified by supervisor and division head

Candidate should have…

  • an understanding of inquiry based pedagogy and experience with developing curriculum
  • knowledge and understanding of child development and constructivist teaching
  • experience with both standards-based assessment and progressive teaching methods
  • an ability to effectively differentiate instruction
  • experience with anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administration
  • proficiency with incorporating technology into the classroom to enhance learning
  • a commitment to professional development and lifelong learning
  • demonstrated classroom management skills
