Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Air Compliance Manager, located at the Corporate Office in Bay City, Michigan.

Job Summary:

The Manager of Air Compliance at Michigan Sugar Company will lead and ensure environmental air compliance for the Company including monitoring and auditing for environmental air compliance; managing permits and the permitting process; and training and mentoring all levels of employees on environmental air compliance. The Manager of Air Compliance works with the Director of Environmental and Manager of Water/Wastewater Compliance as the contact for all environmental compliance matters. The Manager of Air Compliance develops policies, procedures and conducts regular environmental air inspections.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess business impacts of new and pending environmental regulations and legislation as they may apply across the Company. This would include the Clean Air Act..
  • Support plant personnel in environmental permitting preparation, operating compliance and longer-term operational strategies with a direct reporting line to Corporate Management
  • Represent the company through interactions with regulatory agencies
  • Develop strategy, budgets and schedules for implementation or management of all permitting and compliance programs.
  • Develop environmental policies, including setting and tracking of targets, and work with management on the implementation of the policies
  • Develop and implement tools to track and support compliance including completing and filing all required governmental reporting.
  • Conduct environmental audits and inspections of facilities.
  • Provide compliance summaries for legal, financial and insurance purposes.
  • Represent the Company on environmental and industry committees including those focused on regulatory changes and environmental legal issues.
  • Support capital projects for permitting including budgetary estimates.
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as directed.

Position Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Environmental Engineering or Science. A related degree in Science, e.g., Chemistry or Biology, may be considered with relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of regulatory policy and regulatory compliance including air permitting (Title V permit experience preferred) along with a minimum of 5 years’ supervisory experience required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong communications/interpersonal skills required.
  • Professional licensing or other recognized environmental certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of the sugar industry a plus.
