Admissions Counselor

Job Summary

This position performs a variety of routine-to-complex duties including but not limited to upholding the mission of Columbia College in carrying out the duties of the position; a commitment to positive interpersonal behaviors, professional communication, diversity, integrity, leadership, stewardship, respect and accountability to students and employees is essential; recruits appropriate students to the College by establishing relationships from inquiry to enrollment; responsible for day-to-day activities which include outreach and communication to external constituent groups, prospective students and parents. This position is accountable for the performance and achievement of enrollment goals, and college goals as identified by the Dean of Enrollment Management and contributes to the effective operation of the Admissions Office; and performs related duties as assigned. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision and reports to the Associate Director of Admissions.

Essential Job Functions

  • Recruits and manages a geographically assigned territory, to include but not limited to, school visits, attendance at college fair programs, extensive phone and electronic outreach to prospective students and parents, and general relationship building with external constituent groups, prospective students and parents.
  • Maintains discretion and professional judgment to determine the most appropriate students to recruit to the College.
  • Researches, develops and maintains working relationships with guidance counselors and teachers in the high schools; schedules visits, travels to the appropriate high schools, and conducts appropriate follow-up to build and maintain ongoing relationships.
  • Reviews applications within a geographic territory and makes decisions about which students should be admitted to the College.
  • Conducts annual assessments of individual and group recruitment results.
  • Represents the College within various professional organizations.
  • Assists with specific projects as assigned by the Director of Admissions and/or the Dean of Enrollment Management, which may include open house planning, supervision of tour guides or overnight hosts, international and transfer admissions, social media, marketing/publications, etc.
  • Travels extensively on behalf of the College to high schools within a geographically assigned territory, college fair programs, and professional conferences.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements To Perform Work

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, business administration or closely related field.
  • Prior experience working in a college environment with interactions with faculty, staff, and students preferred.
  • Some experience in sales/recruitment or college/program admissions preferred.
  • Knowledge and/or the ability to articulate the strengths and needs of an excellent liberal arts college.
  • Must be detail-oriented with good personal planning and time management skills.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours which may include early/late hours, occasional weekends, and the ability to travel extensively as needed.
  • Must have a valid SC Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel, and Microsoft Teams; experience with utilizing Google and data management tools; must have strong computer and systems skills.

Physical Demands

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
