The University of Washington Department of Emergency Medicine established the Section of Population Health in 2018. Population health is broadly defined as both the elimination of diseases and injuries, as well as the intersecting and overlapping factors that influence health. Our Section consists of more than ten faculty, many with extramural research funding, and a robust educational program. Although individual faculty interests vary, we have largely concentrated our research, education, advocacy and service activities on developing and evaluating systems of care serving communities local and globally, often focusing on underserved and vulnerable populations and the associated social, economic and environmental determinants of health. Current and past funding includes the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute on Aging (NIA), NASA, and University of Washington internal grants through the Population Health Pilot Grant, Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) and Global Innovation Fund. Similarly, broad, our research portfolio includes a blend of domestic and international health services, impact evaluations, informatics and clinical trials. Examples of current research include improving care of patients with opioid use disorder, increasing linkage to care for refugees with HIV in Uganda, examining ED-based screening for social determinants of health, and evaluating the impact of the Medicaid Transformation Project on ED utilization in King County.

This position will be a multifaceted role entailing data management, complex statistical analysis, and reporting of data related to projects within the Section of Population Health. The Section’s projects bring together multiple clinical and academic disciplines, academic collaborations within and outside the University of Washington, and a variety of community and governmental partners to investigate healthcare utilization, clinical outcomes, costs, and patient reported outcomes especially as it relates to the provision of emergency care and interventions for vulnerable populations.

This position requires a flexible candidate willing to build a program with faculty guidance. The candidate will be expected to apply scientific knowledge gained through formal education and experience to maintain sophisticated database structures that support data collection and analysis for the Section’s research projects. The role requires an understanding of and experience in advanced statistical analyses and database management. The individual will work with a variety of healthcare data sources including data collected from hospital electronic records, administrative claims data, vital statistic records, and patient-reported survey data, among others. Additionally, a research background and understanding of research principals and methodology are required. The candidate is expected to be able to work closely with a diversity of investigators/partners in order to operationalize data analyses to achieve research aims.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development of Data Collection for Study Design and Data Analysis (70%)

  • In partnership with Principal Investigators and research faculty, develop and operationalize detailed statistical analysis plans that match with desired research outcomes
  • Comprehend and interpret complex data files using data field codes and data dictionaries
  • Support the design of, use, and successfully manipulate large clinical and administrative databases for analysis of data (i.e. hospital data, administrative claims data, vital status records, healthcare payer claims data-sets, and patient reported survey data)
  • Complete complex statistical analysis of data using R, SAS, or STATA
  • Assess and analyze research project aims and milestone goals and provide input in the development of appropriate work timelines based on available data and research databases

Data Management (30%)

  • Generate database queries/reports using Microsoft SQL and Access
  • Proactively manage databases and acquired data, ensure accuracy of data and participate in quality control activities
  • Develop and validate complex outcome measures and other derived variables based on large-scale healthcare data
  • As needed, serve as a liaison between the project team and data vendor/sources to communicate data needs and facilitate data delivery
  • Complete and maintain appropriate regulatory approvals such as data use agreements, human subjects review, as necessary for the project
  • Design, test, and implement methods and formats for data reporting
  • Other duties as assigned



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Master's degree in Biostatistics, Health Services, Epidemiology, or related area and two to four years’ experience in a related area or equivalent with at least one year of experience with secondary analysis from existing large data-sets


Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED:


  • Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Health Services, Epidemiology, or comparable field
  • Experience in statistical analysis
  • Experience with R, SAS, STATA, or other coding language
  • At least one year of experience with secondary analysis from existing large data-sets, particularly claims data such as Medicare claims, Medicaid claims, Truven Marketscan, Optum, etc.
  • Experience with database management
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL & Access
  • Demonstrated ability to participate productively in interdisciplinary research teams
  • Strong quantitative aptitude, desire to learn new skills and information, and ability to interpret complex analytic quantitative information
  • Strong sense of focus and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, self-motivation, flexibility, strong communication skills
  • Experience with Epic, Cerner, or other electronic medical record system. Familiarity with Amalga
  • Experience with scientific writing and interest in making significant content contributions to manuscripts and presentations as well as technical reports for sponsors or partners, especially with presentation and visualization of data
