SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Assists the Executive Director in collaboration with the Dean of Instruction in providing leadership and on managing the adult education program including adult basic education, high school completion, college transition, enrichment and academic programs, career services including career advising, and other programs as deemed appropriate. In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Dean of Instruction, and other leadership-level staff, the Assistant Director will ensure curriculum standards are met, oversee staff, manage budgets, facilitate a transparent, equitable, and efficient operation of PAE, and act as an ambassador of Portland Adult Education.
Essential Job Duties
Assists in managing all aspects of the adult education program’s efforts to meet mission, vision and goals
Collaborates with the Executive Director on school-wide operations and systems
In collaboration with the Finance and Grants Coordinator, supports the Executive Director in monitoring program expenditures and revenues including grant and local funding sources
Assists with preparing budgets
In collaboration with the Executive Director and the Data and IT Coordinator, prepares federal, state, and grant-specific narrative reports
In collaboration with the Executive Director and the school leadership, identifies potential funding sources and prepares proposals
Assists with hiring, supervising and evaluating of personnel
In collaboration with the Executive Director and the Statewide NMRC Senior Coordinator, represents PAE in a variety of local, state, and national boards, committees, and forums
Seeks and develops business and community partnerships that further PAE’s mission
Works with district staff to help meet the district’s mission, vision, and goals
Works with the Executive Director and other staff to analyze, share and use school data to inform decision-making and develop and implement the school strategic plan
Performs other related work as needed
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Familiarity and knowledge of private, state, and federal grant applications and reporting procedures
Thorough knowledge of Portland Adult Education (PAE) and Portland Public Schools (PPS) policies and procedures and state and federal regulations and laws
Knowledge of adult learner curriculum development, instruction, school operations, adult student services, and career services
Ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance as well as good morale
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent people skills.
Education, Training, And Experience
Masters degree from an accredited college or university required
Minimum of 3 years teaching experience and a minimum of 2 years administrative experience
Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered
Certificate And License Requirements
Eligible to obtain Maine State Certification as an Assistant Director of Adult Education
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
