SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of Principal.

Position Purpose

  • Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the English as a Second Language Teacher will provide instruction to non- or low-English speaking students working to improve their English language competency levels in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  • Provides appropriate instruction in ESOL.

-Seeks opportunities for professional development and enrichment in the teaching and learning of second languages, particular English as a Second Language. -

  • Presents a professional demeanor which enhances the image of the school.
  • Exhibits professionalism in all job related situations.

-Develops, implements, monitors and assesses the English Language Proficiency of each identified ELL and ELL-M student. -

  • Communicates with parents in all aspects of their child’s English Language Services.

- Completes designated procedures for students referred for ESOL service. -

  • Compiles, maintains, and submits all required records. 10. Provides educational services according to the guidelines of the program and through the established delivery model for service.
  • Serves as a resource and works collaboratively with the general education teachers who teach students with limited English proficiency.
  • Maintains prompt and professional communication with parents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.

Additional Duties

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

  • Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, writing, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job & functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment

Required Duties & Responsibilities

Employee must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function of the position. The incumbent will adhere to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s Code of Ethics for Educators, all Gainesville City Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, school system procedures, and all other applicable professional performance criteria. Maintenance of criminal history check is required for all employees.

Certification/License

  • Georgia State Certification as a ESOL Teacher or as required for position.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree preferred.

Experience

  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
