Information Technology Services (ITS), a service organization that provides technology support for the University of Iowa campus, is seeking a Director of Network Services.

Enterprise Infrastructure Network Engineering Services (EI-NES) is a central IT network service delivery team that focuses on highly available, enterprise grade IT network service delivery to a Big Ten campus of over 40,000 students, faculty, and staff. As a valued member of the EI team, the Director of Network Services will focus on managing and leading all aspects of the Network Services team and its service portfolio. This includes the campus wired network, wireless network, core routing, internet access, and associated services. This role leads a high-performing team that values critical thinking, quality user support, communication, accountability, and collaboration with customers and peers. The Director of Network Services will work closely with the leaders of the Physical Infrastructure and Data Centers groups to coordinate the physical deployment and maintenance of network equipment.

Some off-hours and weekend work may be required as operations warrant, and the individual may have 24x7 on-call escalation coordination. This person functions under the Executive Director in the Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) department.

Responsibilities And Duties

  • In cooperation with the Project Management Office, manage large-scale and/or multiple interdependent projects and services across multiple functional areas within a college, division or department that has organization-wide implications. Define workgroup methodology and processes spanning multiple functional areas.
  • Management and development of assigned services including:
  • Ensuring high-quality customer service and communication
  • Collecting and monitoring key metrics
  • Planning and direction for current and future services
  • Engagement with service governance groups
  • Engage in strategic relationships and build consensus with key customers, staff, peers and vendors. Lead and advocate participation in established communities and peer groups, including the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), and work with regional partners such as BOREAS, OmniPop, and ICN.
  • Participate and/or lead vendor contract negotiations.
  • Create and manage successful workgroup environments. Identify organizational development opportunities and coordinate related plans and projects.
  • Manage technical staff (full-time and potentially students) as well as Team Leads
  • Assist in budget development and provide projections and recommendations.
  • In consultation with Network Services technical staff, Enterprise Infrastructure peers, key campus IT service providers, and other stakeholders, develop and maintain an architectural framework for Network Services on the University of Iowa campus.
  • Participate in the development of strategic and tactical plans.


Education Requirement

Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Management experience (typically 7 years) successfully managing technical staff.
  • Knowledge of network technologies and network service delivery in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience successfully managing complex projects and initiatives with cross-functional teams, with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relationships and partnerships with colleagues, faculty, staff and students, vendors, the public, regulatory/governmental agencies, etc., and effectively communicate with these stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing people at various levels to strengthen and advance the success of both individuals and teams.
  • Demonstrated dedication to delivering high-quality services as well as strong customer service.
  • Excellent people skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Experience presenting project requests/initiatives with supporting data and key metrics.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated technical and architectural knowledge and experience for selecting, implementing, and operating complex IT solutions.
  • Experience leading process improvement and automation efforts.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Experience working with regulatory regimes such as FISMA, HIPAA, and ITAR
  • Experience managing vendor relationships.
