Summary

Loyola Academy seeks an Assistant Dean of Students who personally models and simultaneously empowers students to live Ignatian values of faith, service, self-discipline and commitment to social justice

The Assistant Dean of Students helps the Dean of Students implement the school’s discipline system and other structures necessary to promote student achievement, character development, and healthful culture both inside and outside the classroom. This includes managing student infractions, supporting restorative practices, communicating regularly with counselors, teachers and other day-to-day stakeholders, as well as being a constant presence on campus.

The Assistant Dean of Students must be someone who models cura personalis with all members of the Loyola Academy community - students, parents, faculty, and staff members

Qualifications

  • College degree; Master’s degree strongly preferred;
  • Commitment to the principles and practices of Jesuit education and Ignatian spirituality as set forth in Loyola Academy’s mission statement and the Profile of the Jesuit High School Graduate at Graduation;
  • Minimum of five years classroom teaching experience or commensurate exposure;
  • Demonstrated experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion work that promotes a safe and welcoming school environment;
  • Effective communication skills both in verbal and written form and the ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage others in difficult conversations and manage conflict;
  • Experience with restorative justice practices;
  • A growth mindset and a willingness to identify and assume new responsibilities in line with an evolving culture; and
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office and Google products.

Essential Functions

The Assistant Dean of Students is a leader in the school community responsible for the following areas during the school year:

  • Fosters a school-wide culture of respect, honesty and integrity.
  • Works with students and faculty to maintain a safe learning environment and healthful school culture;
  • Effectively works with the members of the Dean’s office team and collaborates well with other departments, particularly the Counseling and Safety and Security Teams;
  • Has the ability to relate to a variety of people and needs;
  • Is a calm and productive presence during emergent or challenging situations;
  • Enforces the code of conduct for Loyola Academy students, working toward compliance with rules and policies.
  • Follows through with students who are in non-compliance, assigning detentions or establishing behavior modification procedures when necessary.
  • Meets with students, parents and faculty as necessary to ensure a positive school environment.
  • Establishes an active and visible administrative presence in the building throughout the day.
  • Proctors and maintains a welcoming and safe environment in the cafeteria on a daily basis.
  • Schedules students to attend after school detention and Saturday detention.
  • Supervises after school detention and assigns and reads student reflective essays.
  • Reviews student behavioral infractions on a quarterly and/or as-needed basis.
  • Schedules and facilitates CARE Meetings as needed.
  • Along with The Dean of Students and safety team, provides presence and involvement with significant athletic and school events.
  • Meets with the Counseling team on an as-needed basis to review student behavior;
  • Communicates regularly and pro-actively with students, parents, and teachers that focus on the healful development of student behaviors that are aligned with our Graduate at Graduation profile
  • Participates in investigations regarding student infractions, including bullying/harassing behavior, improper use of technology, use of drugs and/or alcohol, theft of items, etc. These processes may include searching students, cars, lockers, technological devices, as well as viewing film.
  • Provides communication to parents regarding infractions, scheduling of meetings, and sanctions on an as-needed basis.
  • Follow through with students and parents when attendance standards are not met.
  • Meets with students, parents and counselors as necessary to establish clear expectations regarding attendance.
  • Provides assistance for all evacuation, tornado, lock-down and other security drills.
  • Supports the Dean of Students, Assistant Principals and the Principal in their roles.
  • Assists with annual review of Student Handbook and policy changes.
  • Assists with monitoring student behavior at graduation and provides assistance throughout the process.
  • Sits on ad hoc committees when requested.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students/Administration
