About this app

Signal is a messaging app with privacy at its core. It is free and easy to use, with strong end-to-end encryption that keeps your communication completely private.

ā€¢ Send texts, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free. Signal uses your phoneā€™s data connection, so you avoid SMS and MMS fees.

ā€¢ Call your friends with crystal-clear encrypted voice and video calls. Group calls supported for up to 40 people.

ā€¢ Stay connected with group chats up to 1,000 people. Control who can post and manage group members with admin permission settings.

ā€¢ Share image, text, and video Stories that disappear after 24 hours. Privacy settings keep you in charge of exactly who can see each Story.

ā€¢ Signal is built for your privacy. We know nothing about you or who youā€™re talking to. Our open source Signal Protocol means that we canā€™t read your messages or listen to your calls. Neither can anyone else. No back doors, no data collection, no compromises.

ā€¢ Signal is independent and not for profit; a different kind of tech from a different kind of organization. As a 501c3 nonprofit we are supported by your donations, not by advertisers or investors.

I cannot describe how much I hate my user experience in 500 characters or less, but I'll try. Nothing is straightforward. Every solution to a problem has to be Googled because the design isn't intuitive. Constant connection issues. Constant updates. Constant unlinking for no reason. Calls won't go through. And Signal, if you are going to coerce users into linking a mobile device to use the desktop version, make sure the app isn't broken so I can actually relink my devices and talk to my family.

I love Signal. It integrates digital privacy with ease of use really well. I also appreciate that it doesn't have excessive frills like Telegram does. Sometimes the call function is an issue--the call drops or the person on the other end doesn't hear me clearly. These bugs are annoying in the moment but they are infrequent.

I love the clean interface, and that it's so secure. I gave it five stars, but now it's down to two, because the app was very unreliable for the past months. Messages were often not sent, notifications were not received lot's of times. Photos appeared after I write something, but they were delivered like 3 hours ago, but were completely invisible. It's a shame that I have to stop using the app because it's my favorite messenger, but I can't get over the fact that it's been so unreliable lately.

ā˜… Some people search for words, some search for contacts, some search for groups, and some search for meaning ā€” but now all of us can search for emoji in Signal.
