editFormed as if the perfect passive participle of a (not necessarily extant) verb *īnfendō, from in- *fendō, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (“to strike”). Compare dēfēnsus from dēfendō. Contrast īnfestus, which is unrelated .
