Tagalog

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From Proto-Central Philippine *tubig, from Proto-Greater Central Philippine *tubig (cf. Asi tubi, Buhi'non Bikol tobig, Capiznon tubi, Ilocano tubbog, and Mansaka tobig). Dempwolff (1938) posited it to be from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tubiʀ (deep place in the water) (cf. Malay tubir (ledge, steep riverbank, cliff)) but the meaning in Central Philippine languages is consistently water or juice, and no forms have been found to bridge the semantic gap with the Malay term, making the etymology unlikely.

    • IPA(key): /ˈtubiɡ/ [ˈt̪uː.bɪɡ̚], (colloquial) /ˈtubeɡ/ [ˈt̪uː.bɛɡ̚] (noun)
    • IPA(key): /tuˈbiɡ/ [t̪ʊˈbiɡ̚], (colloquial) /tuˈbeɡ/ [t̪ʊˈbɛɡ̚] (adjective)
  • Syllabification: tu‧big
