Hi, any possibility that you can rethink your deletion of this? He seems to be at least marginally notable, based on the article. It did read like a copyvio, but I couldn't find it online anywhere, and it needs rewriting, but the person himself seems notable. User:Zoe|(talk) 22:04, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you have no objections, I'm going to list it at WP:DRV. User:Zoe|(talk) 18:19, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Citations in castleroid article

[edit]

Why have you removed the "(Qualls)" parenthetical citation in the Castleroid article? If you'd read the references subcat it's clear that a review is being cited. No one is trying to brand the article with their username. Guermantes 23:00, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Red to grey

[edit]

Yeah, perhaps the red on the Shaw template was a bit much, but I swear it was all for the common good! I suppose grey matches Beckett's black...oh well. I was just so tired of that light blue. :) Cheers! -- Yossarian 10:12, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure that is the source of Image:Ps3-controller.jpg?

[edit]

You said the image is licensed as GFDL and was taking from a Nintendo DS fan website. I saw the exact same image but higher resolution from Engadget/Joystiq and they claim they're taking photos and are attending the presentation. I go with them as the source consider they're owned by a major corporation (TimeWarner) and have the money and credentials to attend the presentation. Thier stuff is copyrighted, too. Regarding swearing

[edit]

Garrett, while it may not be wise to cuss, it's best not to remove cuss words from talk pages. Wikipedia is not bowdlerized for childrens' protection. WhisperToMe 07:06, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have... no idea what you're referring to. How long ago was this? Well, while I can't recall the case I was likely enacting WP:RPA or somesuch. GarrettTalk 07:18, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone has uploaded a new version of LinkandMidna.jpg, which is actually just a cropped version of Twilight9sj.png. Please re-upload the old version if you still have it, thanks. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 20:50, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. We don't usually allow redirects from WP: to user space. Might I suggest you simply move your essay to WP:SEWAGE? --kingboyk 09:16, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's your call mate but I rather liked WP:SEWAGE :) --kingboyk 11:04, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Voting with images

[edit]

Thanks Garrett. My opinion is that we should sort out issues according to the guidelines. But there seems to be an obsession with putting everything to the vote. We have guidelines that cover everything, so I don't know why people are calling for a vote so often. --WikiCats 07:19, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Criteria for speedy deletion

[edit]

Hi Garrett. I noticed you recently closed a few AfDs early citing speedy deletion. While the articles themselves are certainly awful, I just wanted to remind you that hoaxes, WP:NOT, and previous non-AfD deletions do not fall under the speedy deletion criteria. Those things are deletion worthy, just not technically CSD. --Alan Au 18:00, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:IAR ON WHEELS. Culling hoaxes improves Wikipedia, so, thusly, IAR applies. GarrettTalk 23:11, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The reason that putative hoaxes are not speedy deletion material is that there are more things in heaven and earth, Garrett, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. It is does almost no harm to let hoaxes go the full distance on XfD, and culling something odd and fringe but true damages Wikipedia. Save the rouge card for when you really need to use it.

Image:Bandai Satellaview base unit.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bandai Satellaview base unit.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 15:37, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Classes in World of Warcraft

[edit]
Your comment: Afd is first and foremost critiquing articles' current status, not their potential.

I'd ask that you think a more deeply about this. Look at the first "article" speedy deletion criterion for some fodder: The reason that it emphasises context is because the content can come later. Deletion of material as unverifiable is another example: We give editors the chance to supply sources before removing information. Deletion is in fact all about potential, not current status.
152.91.9.144 23:27, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that was poorly worded. What I weas meaning to convey is that it's a combination of the two (poor articles valid good subjects get deleted regularly despite their potential). GarrettTalk 03:22, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiReview (a bit off topic)

[edit]

hello, Garrett. I posted a message on your Reviews Wiki member page, but I assume you don't check it too often, so I'll post it here too, sorry for the off-topic-ness :) And also, sorry if I didn't use the right code or if I didn't insert the section correctly. I'm a bit lost in all this code :). hi, Garrett. I am quite new to the wiki world, and I would like to see just how feasible a Romanian version of WikiReview (yes, I am from Romania) would be. What would I need to do to create the Romanian version? I don't mean the translation, but a new version, with new content. I would like to raise interest for people in my town (Cluj-Napoca) to review restaurants and clubs since I have been numerous times in the situation of not finding any good ones, and also not having any personal reviews to look into. So that's about it I guess. Thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Guanomike (talkcontribs) 16:46, 15 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

List of experiments from Lilo & Stitch PROD

[edit]

I removed the proposed deletion you added for the reasons listed here. I know that certain parts of the article are a disaster. Disney didn't help matters with the last movie as it just screams filling in OR. Lots of what I believe are kids are "helping" the article, too. I've been trying to keep some semblance of a proper article there, but it's been a long battle and to be honest, I'm getting rather tired of fighting the battle. If you think the article is unsalvageable, you're welcome to try another AfD. -- Gogo Dodo 05:35, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Master Thief Garrett. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Akalabeth dungeon.png) was found at the following location: User:Master Thief Garrett/RPG rewrite. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 02:51, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Master Thief Garrett, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:Warcraft 3 Humans fight Orcs screenshot.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Master Thief Garrett/RPG rewrite. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. Hi, you flagged the halo25 productions article of mine for deletion, and it may need to be deleted, but could you help me improve it? I don't really want to see it get deleted, but I'm not the best of writers and was wondering what you would like me to fix up on the article. Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_directory: #4 is about prices. This was added a few days ago, and I was told about it on my talk page earlier. So frankly: as no one has objected to this addition, points don't need to be listed on the VC list at all. The compromise doesn't need to happen, as it violates #4 clearly. Fair use rationale for Image:Agahnim_GBA_rerelease.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Agahnim_GBA_rerelease.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 10:06, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns over emulation articles - use of WP:PROD

[edit]

I just noticed that you used WP:PROD templates as justification to have the PC Atari Emulator and Stella (emulator) articles be reviewed as being "uncontroversial" material thus leaving them open to deletion. Please do not used PROD without even leaving any messages on the said articles' talk pages; this makes it seem as though you're just trying to get around the normal WP:AFD process by avoiding discussion about the matter. It doesn't seem reasonable to me to put these articles up for PROD when they are the preeminent emulator programs of the Atari 2600 videogame console. Also, these articles were referenced, and I can add further references if needed; articles that may simply be lacking references is not proper rationale (by itself) to opening them up to non-reviewed deletion. I would have contested the PROD usage had I seen the templates a bit sooner (I do not keep a constant eye on all the articles I have ever edited). Bumm13 22:34, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, two other concerns. You did not leave a {{subst:prodwarning|fooarticle}} template on my talk page regarding PC Atari Emulator (I did not start the Stella (emulator) article). Also, your justification for using WP:PROD was under Wikipedia's Companies notability guideline. I'm curious as to how widely-known hobbyist emulator projects relate to corporate notability. If you are trying to squeeze such topics in under the guise of "non-notable project spam", then that would really be taking liberty with the concept of spam. Bumm13 22:45, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MESS page move revert

[edit]

Hi Master Thief Garrett,

I wanted to discuss the disambiguation needs (or possible lack thereof) of the MESS article (regarding the compiler -- it was recently reverted.) As you may have noticed I mistakenly moved the page thinking there was a bug with the mediawiki software. However, I decided to keep the disambiguation link on the merits that a Mess article (regarding the dining halls), even though it differs in case, already exists. As I mentioned in the talk page and after reviewing the policy, I came to the conclusion that even though they have differing case, they use the same name, thus avoiding any potential confusion. What do you think about this? --Stux 17:28, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Back in June you put the tag "This article does not cite any references or sources" on Grue.

The article talks extensively about the Infocom Zork games and _Dying Earth_ by Jack Vance. I hardly know how you could have more cites. Am I missing something? Keith Henson (talk) 13:27, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the note about this you put on my talk page.

"Surprisingly, inferring that most or all information in an article came from the work(s) it encompasses fails to satisfy the guidelines laid down at Wikipedia:Citing sources. Wikipedia:Verifiability states that, ideally, "Articles should rely on reliable, third-party published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy". In the cases where such sources do not exist, references to the material itself are somewhat permissible as long as they are explicitly referenced. Take a look at Final Fantasy VII#References for an example of how facts about a work can be referenced from within the work itself. In addition to providing acceptable referencing this method clearly separates facts actually contained in the work from original research done by the editors. Anyway, I hope that clarifies this for you. :)

That's a strange policy for Wikipedia. My wife is an archivist and research librarian and she tells me that citing primary sources--if you can--is always considered superior to citing secondary or third party sources. Wikipedia has this backwards on subjects like Jack Vance and computer games (Infocom) where you are not likely to find "reliable" 3rd party sources writing about imaginary predators. And while you can cite a page number where the origin of grues are discussed for Vance (page 248 in _The Complete Dying Earth_, hard cover, 1998, SFBC Fantasy, "Grue: man, ocular bat, unusual hoon") how do you cite a game where the damned things pop up and eat you when your light goes out?

Final Fantasy VII#References has 122 footnotes/cites. Is this really useful? Or is it the result of some kind of wikipedia rule gaming?

I happen to know a great deal about both Jack Vance (being a big fan) and Zork, having played it way back in the early 80s. The article on grues is good and as far as I can see accurate. I guess it will just have to live with the cites problem or be deleted.

Thanks for the education in the weirdness of Wikipedia. Keith Henson (talk) 02:50, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just letting you know I removed the prod on this one, it's already been to AFD twice according to the talk page. The latest was quite a while ago and a "no consensus", so I'd go that route. --UsaSatsui (talk) 08:10, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:PokemonBattridScreen.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:PokemonBattridScreen.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:01, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, why'd ya remove the gameinfo links? ^^; All you had to do was adjust Template:Gameinfo, which I've done now (and moved to Template:Egamia). Perhaps you should restore the links? - furrykef (Talk at me) 05:45, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From reviewing a Talk:MOSNUM archive, I see that you were one of the earliest editors to weigh in on the issue of whether or not the IEC prefixes like “kibibit,” “kibibyte,” “mebibyte” (Kib, KiB, MiB) should be adopted. I wanted to let you know that a new proposal is being considered on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers). Voting on it is ongoing here, and discussion is ongoing at various places throughout the page. I ask only that you very carefully read the proposed new policy guideline before posting a vote. Al-Qadim at Forgotten Realms Wiki

[edit]

Hello there!
On the Al-Qadim page you removed the link to Forgotten Realms Wiki.
You are of course right that the Al-Qadim article there has no additional information compared to the one here. However Forgotten Realms Wiki wants to cover Al-Qadim related subjects that are not deemed noteworthy at Wikipedia, too. There may not yet be to many such articles, but in my opinion too much to be dismissed. I can think of articles on e.g. all Zakharan deities and all Al-Qadim sourcebooks. Do you think that is enough to keep the link (and perhaps get interested editors to get involved there, too)? Daranios (talk) 16:49, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this entry you removed: All context menu items are not available when right clicking search results in the Start menu.. If you are running Windows 7 RTM, try right clicking a Start menu entry by going specifically from Start -> All Programs -> then right clicking on it. Now use Start search box to bring up the same item and try right clicking on it. "Run as admin" chiefly and some other context menu items are missing when right clicking on a search result. - xpclient Talk 21:18, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Master Thief Garrett,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 04:06, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
