Etymology

edit

From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *pukul (hit with a stick). Compare Asi pukoy, Bikol Central pukol, Aklanon pukoe, and Malay pukul.

Pronunciation

edit

Noun

edit

pukól (Baybayin spelling ᜉᜓᜃᜓᜎ᜔)

  1. toss; throw; hurl
    Synonym: hagis
  2. act of hitting something or someone with one end of a object

Usage notes

edit
  • Usually used with unexpected objects. Some examples would be a stone, a wooden or metal rod, a gun, the tip of a shovel or spear, or the peen of a hammer. Unlike pukpok or tira, this is enough to brutally harm or even kill a person in a single blow and break something significantly or even completely.
