From Middle High German tigel, tegel, from Old High German tegel, tegal (earthen vessel), from Proto-Germanic *digulaz, of uncertain origin. Cognate with Dutch degel (kettle, boiler, urn), Danish digel (crucible), Swedish degel (crucible), Icelandic deigla (melting pot; crucible).
