editFrom Middle High German tigel, tegel, from Old High German tegel, tegal (“earthen vessel”), from Proto-Germanic *digulaz, of uncertain origin. Cognate with Dutch degel (“kettle, boiler, urn”), Danish digel (“crucible”), Swedish degel (“crucible”), Icelandic deigla (“melting pot; crucible”).
