editFrom Proto-Hellenic *ksuyō, from Proto-Indo-European *ksuyéti, from *ksew- (“to scrape, shave, scratch”).[1] Cognate with ξέω (xéō), ξαίνω (xaínō), Latin novācula, saucius, and many others.
